Effect of Ligation of Hepatic Artery on Iron Metabolism of Liver

Abstract
For the purpose of clarifying the regulatory mechanism of tissue storage iron, the author investigated the effect of the ligation of hepatic artery on the iron metabolism of liver. Rabbits were used in this study. The hepatic artery was ligated at near its origin. The changes in storage iron concentration of many organs, important in iron metabolism, such as the liver, spleen, bone -narrow and kidney were observed in the animals with ligated hepatic artery alone and in the animals undergone phlebotomy or given iron by venous route following the ligation of hepatic artery. The results thus obtained could be summarized as follows:
1. The liver with ligated hepatic artery released storage iron, but not the spleen, the bone marrow and the kidney.
2. The release of storage iron by phlebotomy was more marked in the liver with ligated hepatic artery than in the one without it.
3. The uptake of overloaded iron was almost completely depressed in the liver with ligated hepatic artery.
4. The release and store function of iron seemed to be unimpaired in the spleen, bone marrow and kidney of the animal whose hepatic artery had been ligated.
On the basis of the above, it is suggested that the release and store function of iron of an ironstorage organ may be regulated by its oxygen environment,
